A new BBC landmark series about art and culture will feature the work of Maria Fusco, Chair of Interdisciplinary Writing at DJCAD.

Art That Made Us airs this week on Thursday 7 April and Maria's work will feature in episode two. The programme is part of the BBC’s range of new highlights, including a major commitment to performance which includes the landmark art series.

Suzy Klein, the new head of BBC Arts and Classical Music TV, said: “I hope everyone will find something to love and enjoy in what we have announced today. Our programmes show exciting range and ambition, with stories of art, culture, ideas, and imagination from across our cultural and creative history.

"At the BBC we are making it even simpler for audiences to find the things they love about the arts. Whatever you watch, we hope you love our programmes as much as we do.”

Maria says, “I am delighted to share the early stages of my research in Art that Made Us, forefronting experimental and embodied techniques of working to access the medieval mind.

“One important method in my work is writing durationally in-situ, which means I stay in one location that is key to the project and work there. This method is employed in the project I am discussing on the TV series. I am visiting anchorholds across the UK, starting with that of Julian of Norwich, who was the first woman to be published in English. Anchorites were medieval religious solitaries, who were literally bricked up into small cells, attached to churches. They were mainly women.”

You can watch the show on BBC and the iPlayer.
