PhD project
Gender Inequality in the Contemporary Artworld
30 June 2024
"For every £1 fetched by a male artist’s work, one by a woman gets a mere 10p – and its value plummets further if she signs it. The creator of Recalculating Art, a shocking new radio exposé, reveals her findings" (Sieghart 2022).
Back in 2013, the prominent German painter Georg Baselitz declared ‘What’s the biggest problem with women artists? None of them can actually paint’ (Clark 2013). With many major museums still collecting only tokenist amounts of artworks made by female or non-binary creatives (Gørrill 2020), this PhD aims to gather evidence of contemporary gender (in)equality within the visual arts – working with specific collections, geographies, or media.
