Terence Daintith

Terence Daintith founded what is now CEPMLP in 1977, when he was Professor of Public Law in the University, and was its first Director. Before taking up that appointment he taught at the Universities of California (Berkeley) and Edinburgh. He left the Centre in 1983, and subsequently held appointments as research professor at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy; as Director of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, and then as Dean of the School of Advanced Study, both in the University of London.

His main research interests are in the fields of oil and gas law, regulation, and constitutional law. He is co-editor of Daintith, Willoughby and Hill’s multi-volume United Kingdom Oil and Gas Law, the basic reference in the field, and was founding editor of the Journal of Energy and Natural Resources Law. Other major publications are The Executive in the Constitution: Structure, Autonomy, and Internal Control (1999), with Professor Alan Page, and Finders Keepers? How the Law of Capture Shaped the World Oil Industry (2010).

Currently he holds a Professorial Fellowship at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, and teaches oil and gas law, and energy law, at the Universities of Western Australia and of Melbourne. He holds honorary doctorates in law from De Montfort University and the University of Aberdeen.
