Biography

Dr Siyang Yuan has qualified in dentistry from Capital Medical University (China). She was awarded STINT Scholarship from the Swedish Government for her Master’s degree in Public Health and Epidemiology (MPH) at the Umea University (Sweden). Siyang did her PhD in Dental Public Health at Queen’s University Belfast focusing on oral health promotion in undocumented migrant mothers and infants living in Northern Ireland. After working in China CDC as a National Program Adviser for the Global Fund to fight against HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria, she came to Dundee University to work on Childsmile-BEHAVE2 dental communication research.

Her research interests reflect her background in behavioural and social sciences applied to dentistry: 

  1. dental clinician-patient communication;
  2. oral health inequalities for socially excluded groups.

As the principal investigator, she conducted Childsmile BEHAVE2 study examining the types of communication strategies used by dental health professionals when interacting with and providing fluoride varnish and oral health advice to children with their parents.

She is a qualified trainer in clinical communication skills and a Senior Fellow for Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). Siyang is an active member of the Research Committee and Teaching Committee of the International Association for Communication in Healthcare and Chair of the Special Interest Group in Communication Research in Oral Healthcare.

She has been invited to give keynote talks and to provide training of dentist-patient communication in China, Belgium, Austria and UK. In 2018, she was invited by the Austrian Government as a Keynote Panellist in the European Union Chief Medical, Nursing and Dental Officers Meeting. She has also been invited by the Belgian Chief Dental Officer to provide a National CPD training in the Flemish Dental Association Conference in 2019. She was invited as a keynote panellist in the inaugural international conference of the 2020 Behavioral and Social Oral Health Sciences Summit. She is now an Honorary Professor of Dental Public Health and Clinical Communication with Nanjing Medical University (China).
