Biography
Patricia Thomson is a lecturer in Education and teaches across several undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Patricia's principal areas of research interest are pedagogy surrounding Primary and early years education, student support, reflective practice, and issues related to social justice. She has also been involved in a Scottish Attainment Challenge evaluation, commissioned by Dundee City Council, and a project to develop a resilience-building game.
Patricia has a strong interest in student support and has held the positions of MA Pastoral Convenor within Initial Teacher Education, and Principal Senior Adviser of Studies for the School of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Law. Additionally, she is the Programme Lead of the BA Childhood Practice/Studies programme.
Patricia's professional background is mainly within Primary education, and she predominantly taught early and middle years. Whilst teaching, Patricia completed her Masters' degree in Education, with a thesis specialising in engendering intrinsic motivation within young children to read for pleasure. Since joining the University of Dundee, Patricia has completed the PG Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education, making her a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She has recently completed a Professional Doctorate of Education on the topic of student support for working-class students in higher education.
Prior to a career in education, Patricia worked as a publican for Whitbread Inns Plc. Outside of work, her interests include travel, cycling, and reading.
Teaching
Patricia currently teaches MA (Hons) Primary Education, PGDE Primary Education, and BA Childhood Practice/Childhood Studies.
