Biography

Nicky qualified from Edinburgh University and pursued a career in Paediatrics with positions in Scotland, New Zealand and Australia. He has lived and worked in Tayside since 2002, completing his postgraduate training in 2012, and as consultant in paediatrics since then. 

Nicky has an interest in paediatric endocrinology and diabetes and is an active member of national clinical networks for each sub-specialty. He became a Clinical Senior Lecturer in 2024.

Research

Nicky’s main research interest is in health informatics. Specifically, how best to use routinely collected clinical data to inform best practice.  His work involves the use of mixed methods to improve the user experience of clinical and patient-facing applications, and to evaluate the impact of these interventions on clinical processes and outcomes.  He collaborates with colleagues across the university as well as working with industry and government funded studies. 

Nicky’s previous work includes:

  • Development, implementation and evaluation of a clinical decision support system within a national electronic health record for diabetes.  
  • Evaluation of an electronic personal health record for people with diabetes.
  • Development of artificial intelligence powered clinical decision support

In addition, he is/has been principal investigator on a number of paediatric vaccine and diabetes immunotherapy trials.  He is currently working to develop an electronic health record for people with endocrine-related conditions.
