Biography
Dr Thompson joined the university in 2018 and has worked in a variety of teaching and leadership roles since. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh (MBChB 2011), having completed previous studies in pharmacology BMedSci(hons) in 2008. He has completed postgraduate studies in Obstetrics & Gynaecology (DRCOG) and Paediatrics (DCH) as well as becoming a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 2016. He also holds FRCGP, FHEA and was awarded a Masters of Clinical Education (MSc with merit) in 2021 by the University of Edinburgh.
He is responsible for leading Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC) for the ScotGEM programme at the University which sees students undertake a year long immersive placement in primary care, with supplementary learning in secondary care. This novel approach to medical education in the UK has allowed a significant expansion of primary care teaching capacity across Scotland. He is also responsible for knowledge assessment in the MBChB programme and has worked extensively in improving the student experience of feedback following formative and summative knowledge assessment. He continues as a member of the GP Undergraduate Education team contributing to teaching and the wider work of the department.
