Dr Ir Suroso Isnandar, Director of Project Management and New and Renewable Energy at PT PLN (Persero), Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company delivered an online lecture on the potential and challenges of Indonesia’s green energy transition. The session was moderated by Professor Xiaoyi Mu of CEPMLP.

Indonesia’s power sector is entering a critical phase as the country seeks to expand electricity supply while accelerating the transition toward cleaner energy sources. With rising electricity demand and growing climate commitments, the development of renewable energy and modern power infrastructure has become a central policy priority.

During the webinar, Dr Suroso discussed Indonesia’s electricity development strategy under the RUPTL 2025–2034, highlighting plans to expand renewable energy capacity, strengthen transmission networks and develop a “green enabling super grid” to better integrate renewable resources across the Indonesian archipelago.

The discussion also addressed questions from the participants relating to the scale of investment required for Indonesia’s energy transition, the importance of international collaboration, policy incentives for private sector participation, the economic risks of energy transition, the early retirement of coal fired powerplants and its impact on transition finance.
