Leiden Rankings 2025
We are top in the UK and 3rd in the world for open access to our research!
Published on 4 November 2025
The 2025 Leiden Rankings place Dundee first in the UK and third in the world for the proportion of research publications that are openly and freely available to the public. This clearly demonstrates the commitment we have to sharing our research beyond academia.
The Leiden Ranking measures over 1,500 institutions worldwide on different aspects of their research output and publications, including the proportion of publications that are openly available to the public.
We are top in the UK by this measure not because of the volume of publications produced but because of the effort to ensure that as much of our research is made publicly openly available as possible and that access is not restricted through subscription paywalls.
Putting research behind paywalls denies individuals and institutions across the world access to the latest research, slowing the progress of scientific discovery and reducing the overall impact and visibility of research.
Being placed so highly on this measure shows our commitment to removing these barriers and ensuring that publicly funded research is freely available, providing maximum benefit to society. It is a testament to the hard work of Library colleagues who support the publication of research, advocate for open access, and help ensure our research is more discoverable and accessible to all.
