As part of a new initiative to deliver a step change in FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Re-usable) research data management, Dr Jean-Marie Burel has been awarded a BioFAIR Fellowship. This fellowship scheme aims to build a vibrant and diverse community of professionals and researchers to lead the way in driving cultural change to embed FAIR data practices across the life sciences. UKRI-funded BioFAIR is a federated digital research infrastructure supporting data driven bioscience by provision of FAIR data management and analysis capabilities along with support and training for researchers.
Jean-Marie has recently taken over leadership of the Open Microscopy Environment (OME) team from Professor Jason Swedlow who established and led the group since 2003. Jean-Marie has been with OME since its founding and has contributed to its significant successes. OME is an open-source technology development effort to build the data management and integration tools needed to make imaging data a first-class resource for the next generation of life sciences research. OME's flagship tools Bio-Formats and OMERO are used daily by both academic and industry communities.
In the past five years, Jean-Marie has played a leading role on FAIR and sustainability initiatives as part of the EOSC-Life project. He currently leads OME’s efforts in the UKRI-funded Skills and Outreach programme, developing a national skills set for imaging data stewardship. As a BioFAIR fellow he will be a thought-leader and ambassador for the delivery of FAIR solutions to research data management and workflows. His fellowship provides an important opportunity for the University to develop and promote good FAIR practices within scientific communities with a primary focus on analytical workflows.
