​​Planning and sustainability practice is rapidly changing. Digital tools, from geospatial software to generative AI, are now central to how professionals analyse environments and communicate proposals. This module gives you hands-on experience with the technologies shaping the profession. 

​You'll work with GIS platforms, build 3D city models, and explore virtual and augmented reality for public engagement. You'll also examine the legal, ethical, and accessibility dimensions of digital practice, including how AI governance frameworks apply in planning contexts. 

​Alongside technical skills, you'll develop the critical thinking needed to use these tools responsibly. Guest practitioners from local authorities and consultancies bring current industry perspectives to the module. 

​What you will learn 

​In this module, you will: 

  • ​Use geospatial, AI, and immersive visualisation tools to analyse, design, and communicate planning and sustainability interventions 
  • ​Develop ethical, accessible, and inclusive digital practice aligned to professional and academic standards 
  • ​Build your skills in line with RTPI Digital Planning CPD and ISEP Sustainability Skills Map competencies 

​By the end of this module, you will be able to: 

  • ​Apply GIS methods to analyse spatial patterns and evaluate data quality 
  • ​Critically and ethically use AI/Generative AI in planning workflows 
  • ​Design and deliver immersive 3D/VR/AR visualisations for diverse audiences 
  • ​Integrate climate resilience and sustainability into data-driven design 
  • ​Demonstrate professional standards (ethics, EDI, accessibility) in digital practice 
  • ​Produce a reflective digital portfolio evidencing skills and professional development

Assignments / assessments

​​Coursework (100%) 

  • ​Digital Evidence Portfolio – individual (50%): GIS analysis notebook, map set, and AI use declaration 
  • ​Immersive Co-design Studio – group (30%): 3D/VR walkthrough 
  • ​Policy and Ethics Brief: AI in Practice – individual (20%): 1,800–2,000-word  

​This module does not have a final exam.​
