Transition to qualified practice module (SW51008)

In this module you will focus on social work methods and practice skills. This will build on concepts introduced in Social Work in a Changing Scotland and Professional Judgement in Social Work.

You will explore social work processes and approaches. This will be done in an ecological framework, using examples of engagement with both structures and relationships. You will be critically reflective in the development of professional identity and 'use of self'.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

• be introduced to practice oriented knowledge, skills and values
• ground your understanding of the social work role, task and process
• develop a reflexive mindset. You will learn to recognise the interplay of personal, histories, dispositions and values with theoretical and procedural knowledge. You will learn to recognise which contributes to professional identity formation

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

• show a developed understanding of social work professional identity
• show an understanding of key stages of the social work process. You will also have an understanding of relevant theoretical orientations and models
• have an awareness and rehearsal of key social work skills. These will include communication and relationship building
• have an emerging awareness of your own positionality and use of self
• have an ability to integrate practice and academic learning

Assignments / assessment

• Coursework (80%)
• Development of individual learning plan (20%)

This module does not have a final exam.

Class based lectures and practice placement
