This module helps you integrate academic learning with practice. It introduces the Standards in Social Work Education (SiSWE). You will evidence your competence against these standards over the course of your programme. The module includes your readiness to practice placement and your first substantive practice learning opportunity.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • explore the underpinning principles of social work: social justice, human rights, collective responsibility, and respect for diversities
  • explore reflective thinking
  • explore personal, professional and societal values
  • explore interpersonal communication with an emphasis on how your own values influence your social work practice
  • explore many theories that support social work. These include theories of Human Growth and Development, and Human Behaviour.
  • explore models and methods of social work intervention. This will help you to work well with others.

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • reflect on the Standards in Social Work Education
  • evidence your learning against, and satisfactory progress towards meeting, the Standards
  • evidence an ability to integrate practice learning with academic learning

Assignments / assessment

To pass the module, you must show that you have met the Standards in Social Work Education. You must meet them to advance to the second year of your program. On placement, you must create a portfolio showing how you have done this. An independent practice educator will assess your practice. They will pass or fail this part of the module.
