Discipline
Physics

You will be introduced to some key topic areas in physics.

This will allow you to take responsibility for your own learning. This is done through a series of online lecture materials and workshops.

The course will focus on basic concepts such as force, energy, and electricity. This will be useful for developing your basic scientific knowledge.

This knowledge is essential in many subjects. In particular, this is essential in all branches of engineering and science studied at the University. It can also be useful in everyday life.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • learn about Newtonian mechanics. This includes:
    • how the dynamic variables speed, distance, time, acceleration, velocity, and displacement are linked together
    • motion in a straight line with constant acceleration
    • Newton's laws of motion
    • how to solve problems involving forces and movement
  • learn about electrostatics and electricity. This includes:
    • electric charge and charge particles when these are not moving
    • when we make circuits using, for example, a battery as a driver for electric current

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • show a basic knowledge and understanding of some important physics subject areas. This will allow you to prepare for entry as an undergraduate

Assignments / assessment

  • Homework 1: Problems and quiz about Equations of Motion and Newtons laws (20%)
  • Homework 2: Question sheet on Energy and Momentum (20%)
  • Homework 3: Problem solving about Electrostatics (20%)
  • Homework 4: Quiz on Electric circuits (formative - 0%)
  • Class Test (40%)

Teaching methods / timetable

The course is held over four weeks. It comprises 16 class meetings, some of which will be formal lectures and other tutorials.

You will be able to ask your tutor to help with any difficulties that you are having in solving physics-based problems
