Introduction to Business and Economics (Summer School) module (SS03001)
Learn about enterprise and entrepreneurship and be equipped with the skills required to generate, evaluate, and enact your entrepreneurial ideas
This module will introduce you to university entry-level subject-specific knowledge and related understanding. You will also be introduced to some of the key academic and professional skills required by undergraduate students.
You will learn about business strategy and financial management. You will also learn about core economic concepts within the wider business environment.
You will also be introduced to the role of technology, ethics, and sustainability. You will see the role that they play in contemporary business decision-making.
This module will provide you with a strong foundation to work from when you transition to one of our undergraduate business courses. You will also develop broader academic skills such as:
- critical thinking
- digital literacy
- collaboration
- reflective learning
These are skills that will also support you throughout your continued studies.
The module is delivered through a hybrid format. This will allow you to take part either on campus or online. Core learning materials, readings, and guidance will be available through My Dundee.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- explore business strategies and how organisations compete in markets
- develop an understanding of financial management fundamentals
- learn basic economic concepts and the principles of international trade
- examine the role of technology, ethics, and sustainability in modern business environments
- develop academic and digital literacy skills required for university study
- engage with tutors and peers through interactive learning activities and case studies
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- understand key business and economic concepts. These will include strategy, finance, and economic principles
- recognise how digital transformation affects businesses and economies
- engage critically with ethical and sustainability issues in the business environment
- apply academic and digital learning skills in a university setting
- develop personal learning strategies that support a successful transition into university study
- collaborate effectively with tutors and peers during learning activities
Assignments / assessment
Two online multiple-choice questions (MCQs) quizzes. This consists of:
- Assessment A (50%)
- This covers Introduction to Business Strategies and Financial Management Fundamentals
- Assessment B (50%)
- This covers Basic Economic Concepts and Technology, Ethics and Sustainable Business
Each assessment consists of 25 multiple-choice questions, with each question worth 2 points. The assessments will be completed online through My Dundee.
This module does not have a final exam.
