With increasing age, many cognitive functions decline, including memory, processing speed, and executive function. Cognitive ageing refers to the changes in cognitive function that are seen with increasing age.

In this module, you will learn about the current state of cognitive ageing research, including the general patterns of cognitive change across the adult lifespan, different theories of cognitive ageing, different methodologies used in this field, and the possible determinants and consequences of cognitive decline.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • examine patterns of cognitive change across the adult lifespan
  • learn about different theories of cognitive ageing
  • understand the measurement tools used to assess cognitive function in ageing research
  • examine risk and protective factors associated with cognitive change
  • investigate the consequences of declining cognitive function in older adulthood

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • describe the common patterns of cognitive change seen in adulthood
  • demonstrate that there is wide variability in cognitive change
  • describe and evaluate the common methodologies used in the field of cognitive ageing
  • critically evaluate research in the field of cognitive ageing and contrast competing theories and methodologies
  • demonstrate your knowledge of many of the determinants underlying cognitive decline
