Lead and manage complex mental health care at Masters level. You'll critically evaluate specialist presentations, synthesise evidence and evaluate the nurse's leadership role in integrated care
This module prepares you to lead and manage complex mental health nursing care at Masters level. You'll critically evaluate specialist presentations and uncommon conditions across the lifespan. You'll also examine managing deterioration and palliative care needs within mental health settings.
Behavioural therapies are a key focus. You'll critically examine the theoretical underpinnings of CBT, solution-focused therapy, and motivational interviewing. You'll explore how these are applied in practice, and how crisis planning approaches sit alongside them.
The module engages with the broader dimensions of mental health care at a critical level. This includes the intersection of identities such as gender, sexual orientation, and migration. You'll develop a critical understanding of national policies including adult and child protection, and critically evaluate the nurse's role in leading and co-ordinating integrated care.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

- synthesise evidence underpinning contemporary nursing management of complex conditions
- develop a critical understanding of local and national policies in mental health nursing, including adult and child protection
- critically examine the theoretical underpinnings of behavioural therapies and their applications in mental health nursing practice
- critically evaluate the mental health nurse's role in leading care for people with complex needs across the lifespan
Assignments / assessments
Written assignment (75%)
- 3,000 words: critically evaluate complex presentations, synthesise evidence, and analyse policies and behavioural therapies
GP letter or care plan (25%)
- 1,000 words: evidence-based response to a case study
- Both parts must be passed
This module does not have a final exam.
