Enhancing Healthcare Practice in Mental Health Nursing module (NM40303)
Lead and manage complex mental health care at SCQF Level 10. You'll appraise evidence, conceptualise the application of policy and examine the nurse's role in leading integrated care
This module prepares you to lead and manage complex mental health nursing care at an advanced level. You'll study specialist and uncommon presentations across the lifespan. You'll also explore managing deterioration and palliative care needs in mental health settings.
Behavioural therapies are a key focus. You'll critically discuss the theory behind CBT, solution-focused therapy, and motivational interviewing. You'll examine how they are applied in different clinical contexts, alongside crisis planning approaches.
The module engages with the broader dimensions of mental health care. This includes the intersection of identities such as gender, sexual orientation, and migration. You'll conceptualise the application of national policies including adult and child protection, and critically discuss the nurse's role in leading and co-ordinating integrated care.

- critically discuss the theoretical underpinnings of behavioural therapies and their different applications in mental health nursing
- critically discuss the mental health nurse's role in leading care for people with complex needs across the lifespan
Assignments / assessments
Written assignment (75%)
- 3,000 words: critically discuss complex presentations, evidence-based management, policies, and behavioural therapies
GP letter or care plan (25%)
- 1,000 words: evidence-based response to a case study
- Both parts must be passed
This module does not have a final exam.
