This module prepares you to lead and manage complex mental health nursing care. You'll study specialist presentations and uncommon conditions across the lifespan. You'll also cover managing deterioration and palliative care needs within mental health settings.
Behavioural therapies are a key focus. You'll analyse the theory behind approaches including CBT, solution-focused therapy, and motivational interviewing. You'll explore how they are applied in practice, and how crisis planning fits alongside them.
The module also engages with the broader dimensions of mental health care. This includes the intersection of identities such as gender, sexual orientation, and migration. You'll study the policies that guide practice, including adult and child protection, and examine the nurse's role in leading and co-ordinating integrated care.

- critically discuss the application of local and national policies in mental health nursing, including adult and child protection
- analyse the theoretical underpinning of behavioural therapies and their different applications in mental health nursing
- discuss the mental health nurse's role in leading care for people with complex needs across the lifespan
Assignments / assessments
Written assignment (75%)
- 3,000 words: critically discuss complex presentations, evidence-based management, policies, and behavioural therapies
GP letter or care plan (25%)
- 1,000 words: evidence-based response to a case study
- Both parts must be passed
This module does not have a final exam.
