This module explores the mental health needs of individuals and wider populations across the lifespan from a trauma-informed and mental health promotion perspective. Mental health nursing is a lifespan profession, so this module includes a specific focus on the mental health of children and young people, and its relationship to adulthood and older adulthood. The module starts at the individual level, then moves to community contexts, and finally to national determinants of mental health.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- explore through the latest clinical research how significant difficulties in life can impact the thoughts, feelings, behaviour, and relationships of the people and communities
- develop your knowledge, skills, and values in relation to evidence-based nursing interventions and strategies to support people and communities with mental health needs
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- work in a trauma-informed way in any health and social care context

This module does not have a final exam.
Teaching methods / timetable
This module runs for seven weeks, generally over June-July. There is approximately one full day of direct contact each week. Directed and personal study, along with assignment preparation, may take around two further days each week.
