Apply what you learned so far on the LLM in a workplace environment. This will allow you to gain valuable practical experience. You will then be able to reflect upon your internship. This is done by producing an analytical report or a critical and self-reflective portfolio.

Your internship will enable you to develop the knowledge, tools, and methods acquired through your LLM. You will be able to integrate these into specific tasks in the workplace. You will merge your knowledge, skills, and practices as relevant to your internship tasks.

Your internship needs to last at least 8 weeks. This will occur during the summer. It should be organised in a sector that is linked to your LLM. Apart from this, you have significant autonomy in how to design your internship. It should be based on an evaluation of your strengths and interests, the skills you would like to develop, and your career aspirations. The internship may take place in the UK or abroad.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • undertake a workplace internship of at least two calendar months. This will involve working either in a group or on an individual project
  • gain experience working in an environment linked to your degree

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • apply the relevant theory and literature underpinning the internship activities
  • apply appropriate legal knowledge, and tools and methods, to specific tasks in the workplace
  • exercise autonomy and initiative in the production of an extended piece of work

Assignments / assessment

  • Report (100%)

You should prepare a report which may be either

  • a portfolio of work prepared during the internship. This should also include a cover document describing the nature and context of the internship. This should touch on some critical and self-reflective elements.

Or

  • an intellectual report of around 10,000 words which addresses one or more issues covered by the student’s internship. This will place it in a wider intellectual context, with reference to the academic literature.

You will be allocated an academic supervisor. They will liaise with you, the module leader and the host institution.

This module does not have a final exam.

Teaching methods / timetable

As well as your Internship, you will attend 8 hours of classes. These are delivered by law staff with support from Library Services and Academic Skills Centre. There are also an additional 4 hours delivered by Languages staff.

In addition, the module coordinator and/or supervisor will provide one-to-one supervision. This will be in preparation for the internship and the assignment.
