This is a self-paced online module. It takes place over the period of 4 weeks. In this module you will cover key National 5-level Mathematics skills or equivalent. There are no timetabled sessions.

Module materials and assignments will be made available on My Dundee. This is the University's virtual learning environment.

You will post your questions in the Discussion Board on My Dundee. You will be able to share your thoughts and answers from peers and instructor.

By completing this module, you will show your potential to work with a basic level of mathematics when encountered in other subjects. You will also gain knowledge, related understanding and subject-specific skills. This will help you use basic mathematics when required.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • explore the topics that fall under Numerical Skills 1. These consist of:
    • numbers (whole number, integers, fractions)
    • representing numbers on the number line
    • comparing Fractions (with symbols <, >, =)
    • describing fractions as decimals
    • operations on fractions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
    • rounding
  • explore the topics that fall under Numerical Skills 2. These consist of:
    • ratios
    • percentages
    • converting measurement units
  • learn about problem solving. This will involve solving problems with ratio, proportion, and percent. You will also learn about modelling with equations, building linear models and solving equations
  • learn about interpreting data. You will learn about stem-and-leaf graphs, histograms, quartiles, box plots. You will also learn about mean, median and mode.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • calculate fractions of numbers
  • calculate ratios, percentages and convert measurement units
  • derive and use simple equations connecting different quantities
  • calculate summaries of data including measures of average and measures of spread

Assignments / assessment

  • timed online assignments (100%)
