Introductory Maths (Summer School) module (LD02017)
Module Leader
Dr Hiroko Kamei
Course Overview
This is a self-paced online course module over the period of 4 weeks, covering key National 5-level Mathematics skills or equivalent. There are no timetabled sessions. Each week will consist of the following activities:
- Assigned readings/videos with interactive questions with immediate feedback using software called Möbius.
- Submit graded Möbius Assignment at the end of week. Automated feedback will be given after the deadline passed.
Möbius learning materials and assignments will be made available on My Dundee (our web-browser based virtual learning environment). To make the course interactive among instructors and students, students are encouraged to post their questions in the Discussion Board on My Dundee and to share your thoughts and answers from peers and instructor.
Course Aims and Objectives
By completing this course, you will demonstrate your potential to work with a basic level of mathematics when encountered in other subjects, and you will gain knowledge, related understanding and the subject-specific skills that will help you use basic mathematics when required.
List of Topics
- Numerical Skills: Working with radicals, simplifying expressions using the laws of indices.
- Statistical Skills: Ways of displaying and summarising data.
- Algebraic Skills: Expansion of brackets, factorising algebraic expressions, working with linear equations and inequalities, solving quadratic equations, working with simultaneous equations.
- Geometric Skills: Calculating the volume of a standard solid, applying Pythagoras' theorem, geometric relationship.

Resources/Materials
All materials and assignments will be made available during the course through My Dundee (University’s online learning platform based on Blackboard).
All materials and assignments use software Möbius. You will need a PC or laptop with a reliable internet connection in order to access the learning materials and assignments. If you don’t have these devices, you need to let us know.
Möbius learning materials are self-contained. Links to additional resources may be added on the Discussion Board following questions from students.
