The Creative Practice Dissertation is a self-directed module in which you will produce a substantial piece of creative writing in the form and genre of your choosing: prose, poetry, dramatic writing, screenwriting, comics script, or hybrid/multi-media).

Unlike other dissertation modules in humanities, this is a year-long module. This allows you to research, experiment with, and refine your writing.

You are expected to have high standards of presentation and your skills as the editor of your work are as important as your skills as a generator of ideas.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • learn how to develop and produce an independent creative project, paying close attention to questions of technique, concept, and audience
  • engage with other literary and artistic works, and critical, theoretical, and historical sources, to be able to articulate how your work fits into a wider cultural context

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • produce a fully-realised creative writing project to a professional standard
  • produce a reflective essay that articulates a wider context for your work and demonstrates an understanding of other writers' and artists' techniques and concerns
  • manage your own time and seek out resources to help deepen your work

Assignments / assessment

  • creative project portfolio (60%)
  • reflective essay 2000 words (40%)

This module does not have a final exam.

  • In Semester 2, you will shift to more intensive project production, with one-on-one supervision.
  • At the end of Semester 2, there will be a public sharing for the supervisory team, staff members from the School of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Law, and students on HU32002 Creative Practice Research in the Humanities.
