This module concerns Scottish writing of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a period of profound social transformation and dynamic creativity. You will consider Scotland as a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and transnational space. You will gain an understanding of historical themes including Union, empire, Jacobitism and Improvement. You will consider representations across Enlightenment and Romantic periods from iconic figures alongside less well-known writers and artists.

Sample authors include Robert Fergusson, Robert Burns, Tobias Smollett, Walter Scott, James Hogg, and Robert Louis Stevenson alongside lesser known figures.
