Learn a nuanced approach and understanding of the key determinants, challenges and outcomes of maternal health globally from pre-conception to the first 1001 days of life
Completing learning in this module will ensure you gain critical skills in synthesizing information and describe the importance of a holistic interdisciplinary approach to maternal health. The outcomes will also focus on equipping you with the skills needed to design, implement, and evaluate public health programs aimed at reducing maternal morbidity and mortality.
This module is delivered fully online, with discussion boards and interdisciplinary tutor support throughout.

In this module, you will
- Gain knowledge of reproductive health, family planning and fertility
- Recognise the determinants of maternal health in pregnancy, complicated pregnancy, the postpartum and breastfeeding, as well as maternal health in low and middle income countries (LMIC)
- Develop an understanding of maternal mental health
- Be aware of the first 1001 days of life
- Comprehend global maternal health policies
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the global burden of maternal morbidity and mortality, and the key factors that contribute to adverse maternal health outcomes, including social, cultural, economic, and health system-related factors.
- Explain the impact of maternal health on public health and its interconnections with other health priorities such as sexual and reproductive health.
- Critically assess global and national health policies, frameworks, and guidelines (e.g., Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), WHO Maternal Health Strategies) aimed at improving maternal health and reducing maternal deaths.
- Identify and describe the social determinants of maternal health, such as education, economic status, access to healthcare, and cultural norms.
- Understand the influence of gender, age, race, and ethnicity on maternal health outcomes and health disparities.
- Conduct a critical review of the literature on maternal health, including research methodologies, evidence on effective interventions, and emerging trends.
- Apply research findings to develop or improve maternal health programs and interventions in diverse public health settings
Assignments / assessments
- Proposal (30%)
- The proposal should be in relation to a pregnancy related public health issue; this should be a structured reflection 1000 word (+/- 10%). It will typically include a background or literature support, solution proposal.
- Poster online presentation (70%)
- The poster presentation should incorporate the reflection document. You will then present your poster using Panopto and PowerPoint (min 7 minutes, maximum 10 minutes).
This module does not have a final exam.
