GM52040
Advanced laboratory skills in embryology involve specialised techniques and practices that go beyond basic embryology, and are critical for research and clinical applications. These skills are acquired through extensive training and experience.
In this module you will advance your laboratory skills through practical hands-on sessions in highly complex assisted reproduction techniques such as vitrification and intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). To maximise your learning experience you will perform each practical in a group of 3 or 4 students.
These advanced skills are essential for embryologists working in cutting-edge research and clinical environments, enabling them to handle complex cases, improve success rates in ART, and contribute to scientific advancements in reproductive medicine.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- learn how to perform vitrification and warming
- be taught to prepare ICSI culture dishes
- gain skills in manipulating and immobilising human sperm cells
- acquire techniques required to inject mammalian oocytes
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- understand the science underpinning the complex techniques used in assisted reproduction
- practise advanced embryology techniques in a safe and effective way
- validate a clinical process
Assignments/assessment
- assessed laboratory book (75%)
- validation report (25%)
Teaching methods
- lectures
