Field and Laboratory Skills in Physical Geography module (GE31020)
Develop hands-on practical skills in laboratory and fieldwork contexts. This is necessary training in physical geography or environmental science

GE31020
This module introduces students to the importance of research within physical geography and environmental science. We adopt a very practical and hands-on approach geared to problem-solving through a series of structured mini-projects, which each contain essential elements of the research process.
Three main sections of the module tackle core laboratory and fieldwork skills, namely: (1) field-retrieval of sediment cores and their analysis in the laboratory; (2) field identification and measurement of trees, and calculation of their carbon content; (3) field mapping of landforms and sediments.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- develop good practice in the execution of research projects
- develop higher-level field skills in observation, measurement, and reporting
- gain practical experience in modern field and laboratory techniques
- gain a platform for successful independent research that can be applied across a range of modules and as a feed-in to the level 4 Dissertation module
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- evaluate methodologies and associated fieldwork requirements for research in physical geography
- use field and laboratory techniques and develop skills in reporting these results, evaluating the success and awareness of limitations through hands-on experience
- undertake effective fieldwork in the local area, with due regard to safety issues
- develop verbal, numeracy, and writing skills and effective management of data sets
- develop skills of group working
- develop organisational, logistical and planning, time-management, and problem-solving skills
- develop skills in written communication
