​​This module develops your understanding of project management from strategic and practical perspectives. Topics covered include project management methodologies and frameworks (including PMBOK, Agile, and Lean), project planning and execution principles, project environment and quality management, risk assessment and management, and project control mechanisms.  

​You will develop proficiency in tools and techniques such as Gantt charts, critical path analysis, and key performance indicators, and build the project leadership, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills essential in the competitive IT and software industry.  

​Teaching combines lectures with group class activities and case studies that allow you to apply concepts to realistic workplace scenarios, with academic staff support throughout. Where possible, assessments draw on work-based projects from your employer. 

​What you will learn 

​In this module, you will: 

  • ​Understand project management methodologies including PMBOK, Agile, and Lean 
  • ​Apply tools and techniques including Gantt charts, critical path analysis, and risk management 
  • ​Manage project schedules, budgets, and resources, tracking performance using KPIs 
  • ​Develop project leadership, communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills 

​By the end of this module, you will be able to: 

  • ​Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of project management methodologies and their application 
  • ​Apply project planning, execution, risk assessment, and control mechanisms to technology projects 
  • ​Critically appraise risk management models, and how to use them to identify, manage, mitigate and report on risks to the organisation 
  • ​Communicate effectively with stakeholders and build collaborative project teams 
  • ​Adapt to change and apply lessons learned to support continuous improvement​

Teaching methods / timetable

The learning material is provided through videos, review notes, and real-world case studies of projects across different sectors and fields. You will learn through the following approaches:

  • ​Group class activities applying concepts to case studies 
  • ​Academic staff support throughout practical sessions​
