Advanced Structural Analysis module (GA41004)
This 15-credit module covers advanced techniques in structural analysis including indeterminate structures, and the flexibility and stiffness methods
This module introduces a range of advanced structural analysis techniques used in professional structural engineering.
Topics covered include the determination of degree of indeterminacy, and analysis of indeterminate structures using both the stiffness method and the flexibility flexibility method.
Alongside the theoretical knowledge, you will develop your ability to use programming tools to practically solve an array of determinate and indeterminate structures.
You will develop the ability to select the most appropriate analysis method for a given structural problem, carry out detailed calculations, and validate and verify your results using structural software.
Teaching combines lectures and tutorials, with regular opportunities to ask questions and receive feedback, and assessment is through a piece of coursework (60%) and a class test (40%).
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- Determine the degree of indeterminacy and analyse indeterminate structures
- Analyse structures using the stiffness method, including utilising programming tools
- Analyse indeterminate structures using the flexibility method
- Validate and verify structural analysis results using specialist software
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of calculation methods for strength, stability, and stiffness in structural elements
- Select and apply appropriate structural analysis methods to a given problem
- Carry out advanced structural calculations accurately and efficiently
- Use structural software to validate calculated results
