​​Sustainable Infrastructure provides an understanding of the sustainability principles relevant to civil engineering and the construction sector at SCQF Level 9.

The module examines the sustainability challenges facing infrastructure development, key principles for sustainable infrastructure, the infrastructure life cycle, and the methods and procedures used to assess and achieve sustainability targets. 

​What you will learn 

​In this module, you will: 

  • ​Evaluate infrastructure projects using key principles for sustainable infrastructure 
  • ​Apply sustainability assessment methods and tools to infrastructure scenarios 
  • ​Understand the infrastructure life cycle and its implications for sustainability decision-making 
  • ​Generate professionally written technical reports on infrastructure sustainability 

​By the end of this module, you will be able to: 

  • ​Evaluate infrastructure projects using the key principles for sustainable infrastructure 
  • ​Apply sustainability methods and tools to infrastructure scenarios 
  • ​Generate professionally written reports communicating sustainability assessments and improvement strategies​

Assignments / assessments

​​Sustainability Evaluation (50%) 

  • ​Evaluating selected infrastructure projects against key sustainable infrastructure principles. 

​Sustainability Tools and Approaches (50%) 

  • ​Analysis of sustainability tools for given infrastructure scenarios. 

​This module does not have a final exam.​

Teaching methods / timetable

  • ​​Weeks 1-5 Lectures with presentations exploring the sustainable infrastructure principles across the infrastructure life cycle. 
  • ​Weeks 6-11 Readings and presentations considering established and emerging sustainability tools and approaches. ​
