Reinforced Concrete Design provides a thorough grounding in the design of concrete structures to the relevant Eurocodes.

The module begins with an introduction to how reinforced concrete works, then progresses through the design of singly and doubly reinforced beams, flanged beams, slabs, and columns.

You will study deflection and shear design, the detailing of reinforced concrete, and sustainability considerations in concrete design.

A key focus is the use of Eurocode 2 (EC2) as the primary design code, including understanding loading on structures and evaluating load combinations.

The module also introduces the use of computer packages to assist with design problems. Assessment is through a single comprehensive reinforced concrete design project, and teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures and tutorials.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • Understand how reinforced concrete works and the principles behind Eurocode 2
  • Design singly and doubly reinforced beams, flanged beams, slabs, and columns to EC2
  • Carry out deflection and shear design for reinforced concrete elements
  • Produce detailed reinforcement drawings and specifications in accordance with detailing requirements
  • Evaluate load combinations and identify appropriate design solutions from a given brief
  • Apply computer packages to reinforced concrete design problems

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the requirements for strength, stability, and stiffness in structural elements. Plus, understand the design process and relevant codes of practice
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles behind Eurocodes, loading on structures, and how Eurocodes apply to concrete structures
  • Evaluate load combinations, propose practical and efficient design solutions from a given brief, and carry out detailed design of elements and connections in concrete
  • Develop an overall perspective of the design of reinforced concrete structures, including sustainability considerations

Assignments / assessments

Reinforced Concrete Design Project (100%)

  • A comprehensive design project requires you to apply Eurocode 2 to design reinforced concrete structural elements, demonstrating knowledge of loading, analysis, member design, and detailing.

This module does not have a final exam.

Teaching methods / timetable

  • Lectures introducing reinforced concrete design principles and Eurocode 2 requirements
  • Tutorial sessions providing guided practice on design calculations and problem-solving
