IT Work Based Learning III module (GA30011)
As a graduate apprentice, develop research, reflection, and communication skills, producing a workplace-relevant research report and WBL portfolio
IT Work Based Learning III integrates independent research with reflective workplace learning. You will use a reflective framework to consider your own learning in the workplace, conduct a systematic literature review on a topic relevant to IT practice, and produce evidence-based recommendations.
The module also develops your ability to communicate research findings and IT project details clearly and concisely to a range of audiences. Each student is allocated an academic supervisor who provides regular guidance, and support is given through meetings between the student, their academic advisor, and their workplace mentor. Assessment includes a written research report, a poster presentation, and a substantial work-based learning report.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- Apply a reflective framework to consider and document your own learning in the workplace
- Carry out systematic literature reviews on an area relevant to IT practice
- Conduct a programme of research and produce evidence-based recommendations for future IT practice
- Develop communication and presentation skills to disseminate research findings to a range of audiences
- Communicate IT project details clearly and concisely in written and presentation formats
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Use a reflective framework to consider your own learning in the workplace, and demonstrate an understanding of the importance of research in IT practice
- Provide evidence of achieving key learning outcomes within the Skills Development Scotland Graduate Apprenticeship framework
- Carry out literature reviews to determine the current state of the art in a given topic, and make suitable recommendations for future practice
- Develop effective communication and presentation skills to disseminate research findings, and communicate IT project details in a clear and concise manner
Assignments / assessments
Sustainability Recommendation Report (50%)
- A written report critically analysing your organisation's entire structure and processes to produce a robust sustainability recommendation report/proposal.
Poster Presentation (20%)
- A poster presenting the key findings and recommendations from the student's research.
Reflective Report: AI, Ethics, and Your Profession (30%)
- An extensive reflection report (maximum 4,000 words) on the place of AI & Ethics within your professional field. This is a forward-looking analysis, supported by academic literature and your own insights
This module does not have a final exam.

- Meetings between you, your academic adviser, and workplace mentor throughout the year
