Maths for Engineers IV is the fourth in a series of mathematics modules designed to build the mathematical competency required for engineering courses at SCQF Level 8.

The module focuses on three key areas:

  • partial differentiation, which underpins many engineering models involving multiple variables
  • differential equations, which are fundamental to the analysis of dynamic systems
  • multi-variable calculus, extending integration and differentiation into higher-dimensional problems

Teaching combines lectures demonstrating mathematical techniques with built-in tutorial sessions giving you the opportunity to practise applying these methods. Assessment includes regular low-stakes homework exercises and an assessed class test in controlled conditions.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • Apply partial differentiation to functions of multiple variables
  • Formulate and solve differential equations arising in engineering contexts
  • Use multi-variable calculus techniques including multi-dimensional integration
  • Apply mathematical problem-solving and reasoning strategies to unfamiliar problems

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Apply relevant mathematical techniques and tools to solve mathematical problems involving partial differentiation, differential equations, and multi-variable calculus
  • Apply problem-solving and reasoning strategies to unfamiliar mathematical problems encountered in engineering contexts

Assignments / assessments

Homework Exercises (30%)

  • Three low-stakes homework exercises covering module topics, providing regular practice and formative feedback throughout the module.

Class Test (70%)

  • Assessed class test in controlled conditions, covering all module topics including partial differentiation, differential equations, and multi-variable calculus.

This module does not have a final exam.
