​​Structural Analysis & Design builds on the foundational structures knowledge from Stage 1 and 2 to develop your ability to analyse and design structural systems at SCQF Level 8. The module covers the calculation of beam deflections, qualitative deflection drawings, analysing structures using energy methods and load path analysis for civil engineering structures. You will work with 2D structural analysis software to model trusses, simply supported and continuous beams, and frames, and investigate concepts including load cases, force and moment envelopes, and partial safety factors in design. This module prepares you for the more advanced structural analysis and design content introduced in Stages 3 and 4 of the course. 

​What you will learn 

​In this module, you will: 

  • ​Calculate beam deflections and sketch qualitative deflection diagrams 
  • ​Analyse structures using energy methods, including trusses, beams and frames using virtual energy methods  
  • ​Analyse load paths and load transfer in civil engineering structures 
  • ​Use 2D structural analysis software to model trusses, beams, and frames 
  • ​Define and apply load cases, force envelopes, and moment envelopes 
  • ​Apply partial safety factors in the context of structural design 

​By the end of this module, you will be able to: 

  • ​Demonstrate knowledge of types of loading, constraints, and structural systems, including analysis techniques for 2D structural systems and governing equations for beams 
  • ​Understand the relationship between load and structural response, load paths, and how individual structural elements resist loads 
  • ​Sketch the deflected shape of elastic structures and the form of bending moment and shear force diagrams 
  • ​Use structural software to analyse trusses, beams, and frames, and discuss findings to draw correct conclusions 
  • ​Used advanced structural engineering methods, including virtual energy, to analyse structures​

Assignments / assessments​​

Beam Deflections Coursework (50%) 

  • ​Coursework focused on calculating and analysing beam deflections in structural systems. 

​Energy Methods and Structural Design Coursework (50%) 

  • ​Coursework covering energy methods, load cases, and other forms of structural analysis. 

​This module does not have a final exam.​
