PGDE(P/S) Introduction to Learning and Teaching module (ED51072)

You will explore both the theory and practice essential for effective teaching. It will prepare you for going out on your first professional practice placement.

In this module, you will engage with core course content that asks big questions about what the purpose of education, school and teaching is. This is designed to enable you to develop a foundation position from which your professional identity can grow and flourish.

You will also be introduced to the spread of curricular areas that can be found in the Scottish context. You will begin to explore the connection between subject content knowledge and effective pedagogy.

You will also focus on developing your understanding of planning for teaching and learning. You will also develop skills in the organisation and management of all aspects of the classroom.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

• engage with ideas and perspectives about the purpose of education and what it means to be a teacher. This will be done by exploring a range of historical and philosophical perspectives
• develop an understanding of relevant curricular areas
• begin to explore curriculum, pedagogy and assessment as interlinked. You will learn how these are integral to the responsibilities of a teacher
• explore the principal influences on Scottish education. These include key policy priorities, challenges, issues, legislation and guidance relevant to the profession

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

• show a foundational understanding of the structure and content of the curriculum
• understand that numeracy, literacy and health and wellbeing of learners are a responsibility of all teachers
• develop and use a range of techniques, practices and resources to promote and support meaningful learning experiences for children and young people. This will include through effective use of assessment
• draw from appropriate educational literature and policy to inform and sustain your teaching
• be in the early stages of developing your positionality and identity as a teacher. This is with reference to the General Teaching Council for Scotland’s Standard for Provisional Registration

Assessment

Learning outcomes will be assessed by a single written summative submission.

This module does not have a final exam.

Teaching methods / timetable

This is a nine-week module, followed by a six-week professional placement.

·         Monday to Thursday is on campus

·         Fridays are predominantly online

It will be delivered through a combination of:

• on-campus and online lectures
• workshops
• tutorials
• online recordings and tasks
• independent study
