You will learn a comprehensive understanding of the principles of teaching language to children.

You will explore how the development of language skills relates to the principles and practice of Curriculum for Excellence.

You will also explore how the teaching of language can help communicative and transferable skills. This will be done while keeping the Curriculum in mind.

You will develop an understanding of how Knowledge About Language (KAL) enhances children’s language skills.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • learn the main principles in teaching the skills of listening, talking, reading, and writing
  • understand the acquisition of language
  • learn to identify the skills and knowledge required to assist literacy development
  • determine philosophies of the different approaches to literacy development
  • have knowledge about languages and the place of KAL in the primary curriculum
  • utilise resources in a classroom to support language development
  • determine the role of different genres of texts
  • explore how language can be used as a context for developing learning in appropriate linked areas
  • undertake the evaluating assessment and recording of children’s progress with language
  • learn the role of the adult and the wider social context for the development of language and literacy

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand how to enable children to gain, develop, and merge their language and literacy knowledge and skills.
  • understand the importance of developing language skills. You will also understand how this relates to the fundamental principles and practices of Curriculum for Excellence
  • understand how the teaching of language is applied throughout the curriculum
  • be aware of, and be able to respond to, the demands for a professional teacher in terms of language teaching
  • apply appropriate teaching and learning strategies in relation to the teaching of language
  • understand how relevant pedagogical theory makes up the above
