You will learn and develop an understanding of the primary school curriculum. You will understand topics such as:

  • its development
  • classroom management
  • differentiation
  • short-term planning
  • associated assessment

What you will learn

In this module you will:

  • learn in a practical context in the middle/upper stages (P4-7). This will enable you to merge your University-based learning with practical experience
  • develop confidence in planning and delivering stimulating learning experiences to pupils at this stage. This will be done in partnership with school mentors
  • build up to take responsibility for the class over two consecutive days in the final week. This will be under the direction of the class teacher
  • develop your ability to be a critical, reflective practitioner. You will learn to put in place current national educational frameworks and relevant underpinning theory

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • show that you are working towards the Standards for Provisional Registration (General Teaching Council for Scotland)
  • show your role as a professional by observing the General Teaching Council for Scotland's Code of Professional Conduct (GTCS, 2008)

Assignments / assessment

You will be assessed summatively by both a university tutor and the school.

This has an overall grade of satisfactory or unsatisfactory against the areas of the Standards for Provisional Registration (SPR) (100%).

This module does not have a final exam

Teaching methods / timetable

  • tutorials
    • these take place in the second semester with your professional practice tutor. These will consist of small student groups
  • professional practice placement
    • These will be in two parts. Part A is two weeks and part B is four weeks. These will both be in the same school and class
  • placement briefings
    • you will be briefed about placement requirements and expectations
  • recall day
    • You will return to the university for a recall day during placement. This will allow you to have an opportunity to reflect on your practice and meet with your tutor
