Effective teaching in dental healthcare requires a strong understanding of educational theory as well as practical teaching skills. This module gives you both.  In this module you will develop a strong understanding of education theory and practical teaching skills.

​You will study:

  • ​Key theories of learning
  • ​Lesson planning across clinical, practical, online, and classroom settings
  • ​Bloom's Taxonomy in the development of learning outcomes

​Topics you will explore also include:

  • ​Reflective practice
  • ​Interprofessional learning
  • ​Principles of assessment
  • ​Clinical competency assessment
  • ​Feedback
  • ​Technology-enhanced teaching.

​As part of the module, you will design and deliver a real teaching event to undergraduate dental or dental therapy students. You will receive peer, student, and tutor feedback on your session, which you will then reflect on in a written assignment.

​By the end of this module, you will be able to: 

  • ​Critically appraise the key theories and philosophies of learning, teaching, and assessment in dental healthcare
  • ​Show understanding of the core concepts of interprofessional and lifelong learning
  • ​Design and deliver a dental teaching event grounded in evidence-based educational theory
  • ​Critically evaluate feedback from a range of stakeholders to improve future learning and teaching
  • ​Reflect on your personal development needs in dental healthcare education as part of CPD

Assignments / assessment

Written assignment (80%)

  • ​2,500 words (±10%)
  • ​Discusses the educational theories underpinning your teaching session, how the content could be assessed, and a reflection on key learning points and future development needs

​Teaching event delivery (20%)

  • ​Peer assessment of the design and delivery of a teaching session
  • ​Session delivered to undergraduate dental or dental therapy students
  • ​Can be didactic, practical, or clinical

​This module does not have a final exam.​
