Consolidate and extend your dental therapy skills by beginning to manage child patients. Developing advanced knowledge of paediatric care, bone biology, and complex patient management
Dental Therapy 5 is a significant step toward independent practice. You will begin caring for child patients, supported by detailed study of paediatric dentistry, dental anatomy for primary teeth, and the communication skills needed to work with children and their families.
Restorative dentistry skills are further developed, and there is a focus on emergency management including paediatric medical scenarios. Teaching is anchored around regular case-based tutorials, supported by lectures, practicals, and small group activities.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- Consolidate the clinical skills gained in modules 1 to 4 and develop more advanced clinical competencies
- Begin the management of caries in child patients, including the extraction of primary teeth, pulp therapy and the placement of pre-formed metal crowns.
- Develop clinical communication skills for working with children and their families
- This module also provides comprehensive learning in healthcare law and ethics, management and leadership and consolidation of learning in evidence-based dentistry
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Apply knowledge to manage complex problems across all age groups
- Demonstrate increasing competence in clinical and communication skills for the management of child patients
- Be competent in prescribed paediatric operative tasks in a simulated environment and on child patients
- Apply evidence-based dentistry, healthcare law and ethics and leadership skills to make informed, accountable decisions in your professional practice
