Dental Therapy 4 builds steadily on your earlier clinical experience, introducing more complex restorations and periodontal treatments, a wider range of patient groups, and new areas of scientific knowledge.
You will study craniofacial development, the developing dentition, occlusion and mastication, and salivary biology. Medical knowledge expands to include genetics, tumours and neoplasia, the management of infection, and the care of pregnant and nursing mothers. You will also develop your skills in radiography, gaining both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in intra-oral and panoramic techniques.
Clinical skills are developed through case-based tutorials, lectures, practicals, and small group activities. You will be expected to communicate evidence-based practice and manage medical emergencies.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- Consolidate and extend clinical skills from modules 1 to 3, progressing to more complex direct restorations
- Develop knowledge of genetics, tumours, neoplasia, infection management, and care of the pregnant or nursing patient
- Understand craniofacial development, the developing dentition, and the principles of occlusion and mastication
- Develop radiography skills, including the theory, regulation, and clinical technique for intra-oral and panoramic radiographs
- Develop referral skills within the dental team
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of functional oral biology to the assessment and management of a broad range of patients
- Integrate understanding of developmental anomalies and genetic factors to support clinical assessment
- Apply knowledge of tumour pathology to soft-tissue screening in the orofacial region
- Prescribe, take, and interpret dental radiographs with sound knowledge of relevant anatomy and radiation regulation
- Work as a member of a dental team, making referrals as appropriate and managing medical emergencies competently
