Dental Therapy 3 marks a significant step in your clinical development. You will develop the skills to place direct restorations in patients, supported by in-depth study of the carious process and contemporary management approaches.
You will develop the skills to administer local anaesthesia, underpinned by anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and behavioural science. Your understanding of medical histories is broadened to include wider systems and disease processes, and you will be introduced to the management of anxious patients and those with additional needs.
Topics also include cariology, periodontal disease, radiology, and emergency management. Clinical skills are developed through observation clinics, phantom head exercises, and patient sessions. Teaching combines case-based tutorials, lectures, practicals, and small group activities.

- Build on the clinical skills and knowledge gained in your first two modules, applying them to more complex situations
- Develop the skills to place direct plastic restorations in patients as part of a treatment plan
- Learn to administer local anaesthesia, supported by applied knowledge of anatomy, pharmacology, and pain biology
- Develop your understanding of disease processes including cariology, periodontal disease, and pulpo-dental biology
- Gain experience managing anxious patients, patients with additional needs, and medical emergencies
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of oral health and disease to the assessment and management of patients requiring restorative care
- Administer local anaesthesia safely with a sound understanding of the relevant anatomy and pharmacology
- Communicate information, manage consent, and work within a dental team for operative procedures
- Prescribe, take, and interpret dental radiographs in line with current regulations
- Manage common dental emergencies including basic life support and anaphylaxis
