In this module, you will undertake a design project using the knowledge and skills you have gained in the Masters programme to respond to a project brief that aligns with your interest or professional trajectory.

The projects are identified by research staff or groups within DJCAD or externally. You will engage in the critical analysis of contemporary design and real-world challenges through the utilisation of research, design methodologies and design practices.

The module covers Design Research approaches, and advanced research techniques, including qualitative and quantitative methods, enabling you to gather and interpret data effectively. You will apply your research skills to engage and understand the subject matter and identify key challenges or opportunities. From the insights gained, you will explore a range of potential responses leading to a prototype(s) or appropriate output(s).

Depending on the approach and project, the prototype(s) or output(s) produced could be used to conduct further research.  You'll learn to articulate your project through presentations and written reports, enhancing your communication skills.

By the end of the module, you will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to envision and contribute to future design landscapes, preparing you for careers in design research, consultancy, and innovation.

Assessment

Assessment will be through coursework consisting of:

  • An individual written and illustrated report of 4500 words outlining the contextual research undertaken, methods used and identifying the research question/ challenge to be explored and how this was developed.
  • A portfolio of design work including ideation, development, and prototypes
  • A presentation which explains the key stages of the process and outcome, reflecting on what you have learnt individually.
  • Update a social media profile to document and communicate the development process and outcomes of the project to a broad audience.

Teaching methods

Learning and teaching will be through workshops, seminars, studio tutorials and critiques.

Lectures and workshops will be front-loaded to provide you with grounding in topics relevant to existing research in the field.

As the projects you undertake are pre-determined by staff and professionals, the module expects you to take an independent approach through self-directed learning.

You will be supported by an academic supervisor in the School of Art & Design as well as a supervisor from other schools such as Business or Medicine if there are suitable research projects.

You will split your time between the research group or project they are connected to and the studio space within the School of Art & Design.

You will meet regularly over the course of the semester with the module staff to update on progress and receive feedback.
