MFA Studio Research and Practice 2 module (DJ52034)
Develop an ambitious body of contemporary artwork and deepen your practice-based research. You'll situate your work within contemporary art discourse and present it to a professional audience
40 credit module that will further develop students’ abilities to identify, research, contextualise, reflect and articulate material for practical and intellectual application in their own individual practice within the broader framework and understanding of art’s relation to society and publics.
This module continues your studio research and practice as part of the MFA course. You'll make art, examine the contexts that inform it, and consider how it can reach wider audiences through a group exhibition.
Your work is guided by individual and group tutorials, seminars, and critiques. You will have workshop access to work in a variety of mediums such as life drawing, printmaking, bronze foundry and ceramics, as well as canvas making and stretching and picture framing
The module asks you to situate your practice in a contemporary social, political, and cultural framework. You'll develop both the work itself and your ability to talk and write about it with critical authority, as well as exhibit it in a public exhibition.
What you will learn

- Continue to develop your studio practice and artistic research as part of the MFA programme

- Position your practice within traditional, current, and emerging modes of art making
- Consider how your work contributes to contemporary debates in art, culture, and society

- Demonstrate originality in placing your work within the context of traditional, current, and emerging practice
- Apply critical analysis and evaluation to current issues in art, culture, and society
- Articulate and communicate the conceptual and critical framework of your practice to a professional audience
Assignments / assessments
Body of artworks and research progression evidence (60%)
- A body of contemporary artwork (resolved or in progress) reflecting a high level of skills and conceptual knowledge
- Comprehensive progression of investigation through sketches, sketchbooks, maquettes, blogs, or other creative methodology
Critical communication of practice (40%)
- Articulation of your practice and research in the context of contemporary art and broader social and cultural frameworks
- Delivered through a verbal presentation to a professional audience
This module does not have a final exam.
Teaching methods / timetable
Teaching weeks 1 – 10
Tuesdays are group seminar days where you will present your work and research to your peers and have presentations and discussions on professional practice and the responsibilities of an artists.
The rest of the week will be self directed study, as well as scheduled individual tutorials.
Week 6 is a self directed study reading week.
