This module is the second part of the Communication Futures series. This focuses on the exploration of past, present, or future aspects of communication technology.
Building on the research plan developed in part 1, you will refine your research skills through targeted workshops. You will then further develop the theme you identified earlier.
Working closely with the module leader, you will hone the specific research techniques. With these you will be able to produce a digital essay , report or an online piece of journalism.
The topic of your project is your choice. This will often aligning with your studio studies or your future career interests. This allows you to have a personalised and practical learning experience.
What you will learn
In this module you will:
- define an area of study showing knowledge and understanding of a topic of your choice
- identify a suitable research methodology for the study
- develop digital writing styles and conventions for a wide audience
- critically reflect or, present a theoretical argument on your research topic
- lead your own project
- evaluate the results and create insights from your independent research
- improve you time management skills
- show initiative and autonomy through your choice of work
- communicate your ideas through discussion and through text and images to a professional design standard.
By the end of the module you will have:
- a detailed knowledge and understanding of a chosen area of study with a communication focus
- be confident in using research methodologies appropriate to your area of study
- formulated a theoretical argument or critical reflection for your chosen topic
- completed an independent research project; used appropriate research methods; evaluated the outcomes, and created insights
- demonstrated autonomy, initiative and effective time management
- good judgment in handling text and image to communicate ideas
- chosen an appropriate writing style, structure and conventions in the research production
Assignments / assessment
- written assignment 6,000-7,000 words (100%)
- 250 word research topic week 2
- 2,000 word draft week 5 with formative feedback week 6
- 4,000 word draft submission week 9 with written feedback on Turnitin between weeks 9-11
- 6-7,000 word final submission at end of the module.
This module does not have a final exam.
Teaching methods / timetable
Teaching is conducted via lectures, workshops, supervisory meetings and online training.
You start the module by reviewing and updating your research proposal from part 1.
- An assigned supervisor will meet with you twice to review your drafts. They will discuss your progress and your intentions (approximately 20 minutes each)
- you will have opportunities to discuss your topic with peers
- listen to former students discuss their projects. Learn how they have used their research after leaving university
