You will be introduced to the professional environment of graphic design. You will explore your career ambitions through industry contexts and expectations
You will explore your individual graphic design career ambitions. You will also learn about the professional environment of graphic design. You will do this practically through projects. You will learn how to apply your core graphic design skills to industry contexts and expectations.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- take responsibility for the organisation and management of individual and group work
- adopt professional attitudes and standards to design with audiences in mind
- research the context of your graphic design work
- begin to situate yourself as a graphic designer. You will grow to understand your own place in the world of graphic design
- this will prepare you for Level 4 and your individual career ambitions
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- present your design work using professional standards
- understand how external factors influence the development of your design work including clients and audiences
- understand the civil responsibilities, sustainability and environmental and inclusive considerations of graphic design
- confidently apply your skills and design process to a variety of project briefs
Assignments / assessment
- coursework (100%):
- Design process work for each project. This will show your practical exploration and development of ideas and technical processes. It will also show the integration of relevant influences and critical reflection on your design work.
- Final outcomes for each project as detailed in the project brief.
This module does not have a final exam.
Teaching methods / timetable
Learning will primarily take place in the studio:
- You will be introduced to each project through a project briefing.
- Each project is supported by lectures. These will explore relevant graphic design concepts and examples.
- You will receive regular feedback on your work. This will be given during individual and group tutorials/crits with tutors.
- You will be introduced to relevant technical processes and specific transferable skills. This will be done through workshops, talks and inductions from specialists.
Learning materials will be provided online on the University's virtual learning environment, My Dundee. These materials will include lecture slides, project briefings and brief sheets.
