This module will build on your work in Textile Design Principles 1.

You will take a more autonomous engagement with textile design fundamental processes. This means having the freedom to explore processes such as:

  • pattern
  • scale
  • composition
  • texture
  • repeat

Your focus for your projects will be on developing fabrics that show meaningful concepts in wider contexts. They will also explore methods of product visualisation.

You will continue with practical workshops in specialist areas such as knit and print. You will also learn multimedia and stitch approaches to textile making. You will be able to engage in a series of lectures to broaden your subject knowledge.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • further engage with concepts of textile design. This will involve using various materials, processes and contexts that are relevant to the contemporary designer
  • progress design development of pattern, composition and materiality use
  • translate and develop ideas through evidencing understanding of design contexts
  • develop hands-on experience of working through a range of design processes
  • engage with specialist workshops
  • participate in the discussion of design methods
  • develop an understanding of materials and their potential uses within design

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand the concept of interdisciplinarity working methods
  • identify your own key strengths and specific knowledge
  • understand design issues and practice within a global context
  • show appropriate research skills
  • show self-management skills
  • communicate verbally and textually

Assignments / assessment

Assessment will be through the submission of a body of research and project work produced during the module. This may include reflective journals, sketchbooks and a range of analytical and physical textiles and artefacts. You will also be required to deliver an oral presentation.

This module does not have a final exam.
