Graphic Design Toolkit module (DJ21020)
Learn the key technical, conceptual and practical processes behind graphic design. These will provide the foundation for further exploration of the discipline
You will be introduced to the key technical, conceptual and practical processes of graphic design. These will provide you with the foundation for subsequent exploration of the discipline.
You will work on a series of projects. These will introduce foundational graphic design and visual communication processes and forms.
You will experiment with type and image to communicate your ideas. You will work between physical and digital media. You will also get introductions to Adobe Suite and other required media or techniques.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- be introduced to foundational graphic design and visual communication processes and forms
- experiment and explore the manipulation type and image. This will allow you to visually communicate an idea
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- use research to lead the development of your graphic design work
- understand how to use a design process to tackle various briefs
- use type and image to communicate concepts in your graphic design work
Assignments / assessment
- coursework (100%)
- This will include design process work for each project. This will show the practical exploration and development of ideas and technical processes. It will also show the integration of relevant influences and critical reflection on your design work.
- This will include your final outcomes for each project as detailed in the project brief.
Teaching methods / timetable
Learning will take place in primarily in the studio:
- Each project will be introduced during a project briefing.
- Each project will be supported by lectures. These will explore relevant graphic design concepts and examples.
- Regular feedback on your work will be given. This will be done during individual and group tutorials/crits with tutors.
- Specialist will introduce relevant technical process and specific digital programmes. These will be introduced in workshops, tutorials and inductions.
- Learning materials will be provided on the University's virtual learning environment My Dundee. These will include lecture slides, project briefings and brief sheets.
