​​This module introduces you to the materials and processes relevant to contemporary jewellery and metalwork design. You will interpret design briefs and develop your understanding of expanded design approaches, combining fundamental techniques, tools, and equipment to produce a range of objects. 

​Drawing and visual studies, strategic risk-taking, technical workshops, and contextual research build your knowledge and confidence. Introductory lectures set the contextual framework, and workshops explore the design contexts around jewellery and metal design. 

​You will develop your capacity for self-awareness, confidence, and direction through independent learning, working alongside tutors and peers in a studio environment. 

​What you will learn 

​In this module, you will: 

  • ​develop your design, research, and fabrication skills using materials and processes relevant to contemporary jewellery and metalwork 
  • ​engage in critical analysis of concepts, information, and issues within design 
  • ​explore different design fundamentals and their potential application through hands-on making 
  • ​synthesise core subject skills and experimentation into appropriate outcomes 
  • ​understand how to present and convey ideas in a professional context 

​By the end of this module, you will be able to: 

  • ​become familiar with comprehensive jewellery and metalwork processes for design and making through practice and research 
  • ​engage in critical analysis of design concepts, information, and issues; critically evaluate and define ideas to develop through jewellery and metalwork design and construction 
  • ​demonstrate learning and practical engagement with various processes, exploring different design fundamentals and their potential application in jewellery and metalwork 
  • ​synthesise core subject skills and experimentation into appropriate outcomes, showing awareness of appropriate practice in jewellery and metalwork 
  • ​demonstrate a professional approach, including an understanding of how to present and convey ideas​
