This module will soon be renamed Textile Design Principles 1

You will learn the fundamental design processes and principles that make up the textile design discipline. These will include areas such as:

  • visual research
  • contextual research
  • concept and design development

This will help you to develop your design practice.

You will be introduced to specialist workshops in knitting and printing. You will use these as a way to develop a broad and experimental understanding of the design possibilities of those subjects.

You will research and explore a concept that informs and guides your project. You will use thorough research and development. This will allow you to develop a strong foundation in both the artistic and technical aspects of textile design.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • learn concepts of textile design. You will learn to use various materials, processes and contexts that are relevant to the contemporary designer
  • translate and develop ideas through evidencing understanding of design contexts
  • develop hands-on experience in working through a range of design processes
  • engage with specialist workshops
  • participate in the discussion of design methods
  • develop an understanding of materials and their potential uses within design

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • navigate the design process in your specialist area
  • execute further design projects with more autonomy
