In this module you'll explore research, scholarship and engagement in health professions education.

You'll build on basic research and scholarship principles and practices. This prepares you for scholarly participation in the global health professions education community.

What you will learn

In this module, you will learn about:

  • the terms 'research', 'scholarship', 'engagement', and 'impact' (differences and similarities)
  • how to work as part of a research team
  • the role of literature review in research and scholarship
  • developing an argument for the need for a research or scholarship project
  • the role of theory in HPE research and scholarship
  • the philosophy of different research approaches
  • potential methodological approaches and associated methods used for data collection and analysis
  • key ethical considerations and strategies to address them
  • developing an informed, coherent and rigorous research or scholarship proposal
  • appraising criteria that ensure quality in HPE research and scholarship
  • the dissemination of research and scholarship.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • perform a literature review around your aims
  • develop literature-informed research questions
  • develop a coherent and rigorous HPE research or scholarship proposal, informed by theory
  • write an ethics application
  • complete the mandatory online Research Integrity Training.

Assignments / assessment

  • research proposal (ethics application or literature review) (80%)
  • oral presentation of your proposed project (20%)

This module does not have a final exam.
